BlackRock Presents an Exhibition of Mundane Objects as Sculptures

Transforming materials from a found, raw, or mundane state, Evan Reed crafts sculptures that are once contemplative, playful, mysterious, and powerful.

BlackRock Center for the Arts will to present “Evan Reed: New and Recent Sculptures” from Saturday, July 22 through Saturday, August 26, 2017 in the Kay Gallery.

Recently Reed has been reacting to and seeing the most potential in sculptural mediums that are plucked from the curbside, as opposed to those he might have purchased at the art supply store or big-box hardware center. Stumbling upon old, discarded furniture out in the street on collection day engages the local artist’s curiosity.

Reed is challenged to imagine how he can intervene as he observes decaying structures being repossessed by nature. His process of discovery begins with a recognition that these items hold memories and associations derived from their original purpose. Transferring that familiarity into a new sculptural form creates visual puzzles for Reed to mull over and decipher as he creates expressive forms that transcend our routine experiences. He allows personal experiences, current events, and social commentary to inform his work, but also celebrates ambiguity in order to keep things open-ended for the viewer.

Evan Reed received an MFA in Sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA and a BFA from the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC. Solo exhibitions of his sculpture and drawings have been presented at Hillyer Arts Space in Washington, DC; Greater Reston Arts Center in Reston; Project 4 Gallery in Washington, DC; Arlington Arts Center in Arlington; Flashpoint Gallery in Washington, DC; and Hungerford Gallery at the College of Southern Maryland in La Plata.

The center will host a Meet the Artists Reception on Saturday, July 22 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm where the artist will deliver brief remarks at 2:30 p. and be on hand to answer questions throughout the event. Evan Reed will return to BlackRock on Saturday, August 26 at 1:00 pm to deliver an Artist Talk with the discussion focused on his creative process and the techniques used to create the works on display. Both events are free and open to the public.

BlackRock Center for the Arts is centrally located in the heart of Germantown, next to the Germantown Public Library, at 12901 Town Commons Drive, Germantown, MD 20874. Free parking is available in the lot at the rear of the building and along the street.
