Flash Flood Watch for Germantown Area, Expect Heavy Rains for PM Rush Hour

The National Weather Service in Sterling, Va. has issued a Flash Flood Watch for Germantown and all of Montgomery County and the Washington D.C./Baltimore region. The Flash Flood Watch will go into effect at 3:00 pm and remain until 9:00 pm, Monday, June 19.

A cold front will move through the region this afternoon and early this evening. Widespread showers and thunderstorms will accompany this front some of which could produce intense rainfall rates in a short period of time. Widespread rainfall amounts of 1- to 2-inches are expected with localized amounts of 3- to 4-inches possible which could result in flash flooding.

According to a Special Weather Statement from the NWS, “There is also an enhanced risk of severe thunderstorms generally east of the Blue Ridge Mountains and a slight risk elsewhere. Isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts are possible. The most likely time frame for severe weather is between 1:00 pm and 6:00 pm.”

The NWS said, “Flash flooding of creeks, streams and roadways will be possible, especially in urban and poor drainage areas” as a results of storms expected to move through the area later today.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation. The NWS suggests everyone should monitor forecasts and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.
