Homemade Explosives Found Along Trail in Germantown Area Park

May 31, 2017

Police are warning area hikers and bikers to be aware of their surroundings on local trails, after two homemade “Drain-O Bomb” devices were found on a trail in the Germantown area.

According to Maryland-National Capital Park Police on Tuesday, May 16 at about 10:18 am park police found two 12-ounce plastic water bottles which had been converted into homemade explosive devices, known as Drain-O Bombs. The devices were found on the Clarksburg Heights Trail in Little Seneca Greenway Stream Valley Park in Germantown, according to officials.

Maryland-National Capital Park Police, Montgomery County Division, responded on the scene and confirmed the devices were explosives that had not detonated. The area was further searched for additional devices and evidence; both had negative results. Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s Office is continuing the investigation with Maryland-National Capital Park Police - Investigative Services Section.

Park Police say that if anyone should encounter any suspicious devices such as these, do not approach or touch them.  Call Maryland-National Capital Park Police Communications Section immediately at 301-949-3010 and stay away from the area.
