Overturned Van Snarls Morning Traffic

Wisteria Drive in Germantown was in both direction closed for about an hour Tuesday morning as emergency crews worked to extricate the driver of a van that ended up on its side, just west of Crystal Rock Drive, near Seneca Valley High School.

Montgomery County Fire Rescue Service units were called to Wisteria Drive in front of the Germantown Post Office at about 8:45 am Tuesday, May 30 for reports of a van overturned in the roadway.

Arriving units found a green Dodge Caravan on its side blocking Wisteria Drive. After stabilizing the van, MCFRS personnel were able to cut away the front windshield and the driver; an adult female was able to walk out through the opening. The driver was assessed by EMS, but not transported, apparently suffering minor injuries in the collision.

Witnesses said the Caravan was traveling westbound on Wisteria Drive towards Germantown Road when it attempted to go around two other cars that had stopped to make the left into the Post Office. While attempting to go around vehicles, the van went up the curb and struck a sign pole and a tree. It struck the tree with such force as to rip the bark off and send the van tumbling and spinning on its side.

The incident created traffic problems for about an hour during the rush hour as traffic was diverted off Wisteria Drive.
