Clarksburg Super Seniors Celebrate Anniversary

Last week, a Clarksburg institution celebrated a milestone. On Wednesday, May 10, the Clarksburg “Super Seniors” celebrated their 42nd anniversary.

This long-standing group was founded in May 1975 by Clarksburg historian, the late Ethel Foreman, and others. They wanted to create a resource for seniors to keep active in body and spirit.

The celebration, which was held at the Montgomery County Recreation Center on Frederick Road, included Montgomery County Recreation Department Director Gabriel Albornoz who congratulated group members on completing another year of fellowship and community involvement. Albornoz honored the club’s current coordinator Joann Woodson. The group presented Woodson with a certificate of appreciation and a gift. She has been a member of the group handling various duties for 31 years.

County Recreation Specialist Stacy Sigler arranged for a duo to perform live music, and everyone shared potluck lunch along with yummy homemade desserts. The group also recognized our two members who have May birthdays and wished each other Happy Mother’s Day.

In addition to celebrating the “Super Seniors” anniversary, the group later recognized the National Older Americans Month. The theme for May 2017 is “Age Out Loud” and elected to share stories. Group members joined in discussions of families in Montgomery County; some stories about ancestors dated back to the Civil War era.

Among the stories, was one concerning the group’s founder Ethel Foreman, a community leader for more than 40 years, despite having been confined to a wheelchair. Even so, she was a staunch advocate following up with agencies and organizations by telephone on behalf of the elderly, the disabled, and the disadvantaged. She was featured in newspaper articles for her activism, and received many awards — some were displayed at the meeting.
