Family of Four Displaced After Townhouse Fire in Damascus

A family of four is without a home after a fire ripped through their Damascus townhouse on Sunday night.

The fire was reported at about 7:45 pm on Sunday, April 23 at 25514 Butterfield Way in Damascus, according to Pete Piringer, Montgomery County Fire Rescue Service senior spokesman. More than 60 firefighters were called to the scene of the three-story middle-of-the-row townhouse which is off Valley Brook Drive and Canvasback Way in Damascus.

Piringer said the officials believe the fire was accidental and the family was not home at the time of the fire. Smoke alarms alerted a neighbor who called fire rescue. When firefighters arrived, flames were showing through the windows of the unit. Firefighters began evacuating neighboring townhouses, and the MCFRS Rapid Response Task Force was called to the scene.

Firefighters from seven different fire stations including fire stations 713 in Damascus, 734 and 729 in Germantown, 735 in Clarksburg, 708 in Gaithersburg and 717 in Laytonsville battled the blaze.

Forty-five minutes after the initial call, at about 8:30 pm, MCFRS had the fire which was mainly in the basement of the unit, with extension to the exterior and other upper portions of the townhouse, according to Piringer. The fire did significant damage the townhouse. Fire officials estimate it did more than $100,000 in damage. Thankfully, no one was injured. Officials have ruled the fire accidental in nature.
