Fire Injures Boyds Toddler

A Sunday fire at a Boyds farm has left a four-year-old boy badly burned.

The fire was reported at around 2:30 pm on Barnesville Road in Boyds, south of Peach Tree Road. Arriving units reported seeing smoke coming from the living quarters on top of a storage building that housed hay bales, said Montgomery County Fire Rescue senior spokesman Pete Piringer.

The fire occurred in the living quarters attached to a large barn-structure that stored hay bales. MCFRS evaluated multiple people for possible injuries. Only the child, who was taken to Children’s National Medical Center with serious burns, was known to be hospitalized.

Firefighters had called for a Maryland State Police helicopter for the boy, but the request was canceled after further evaluating the child, Piringer said. Instead he was taken to a hospital, where his injuries were determined to be not life threatening, Piringer said.

The area had no fire hydrants, as a result fire crews had to use tanker trucks to bring water to the scene. The fire burned through the floor of the living quarters, Piringer said. Investigators believe fireworks may have started the blaze, which caused $20,000 damage.

A total of 65 firefighters were on site at one point, aided by several “large capacity” water tankers, and the fire was quickly brought under control, Piringer said.
