Local Basketball Program Produces Winners On and Off the Court
Germantown has become known as quite the hotbed of basketball thanks to the success of the Seneca Valley High School boys program and their trips to the Maryland State tournament, but some of that success can be traced back to Germantown HEAT, a youth basketball feeder program. Screamin’ Eagles such as Brandon Simpson, Tyran Crawford, Harold Dotson, and Maurice Whitsett among others, are all alumni of Germantown HEAT. In this case, HEAT stands for Hard-work, Education, Attitude, and Teamwork.
Germantown HEAT focuses on their positive and constructive instruction style, by encouraging and motivating the players. Germantown HEAT’s goal is for each player to become the very best they can be on and off the court — both collectively and individually. The coaches help with homework, they promote teamwork and help the kids reach their personal goals.
Germantown HEAT cannot run smoothly without the help of the parents who host fundraisers to help the boys pay for fees and they also provide free shoes for the older boys. With the renewed energy, enthusiasm and the family sense of this team, there is no doubt that these kids are in good hands.
With the stress on education and getting good grades, it is required that the boys maintain a 3.0 GPA, as well as bringing their interims and their report cards to practice. Some of the players had to improve their performance in the classroom before playing in tonight’s extremely important game.
Two Germantown HEAT teams that played Saturday night, March 4 at Magruder High School in Rockville. The 6th-grade team coached by Quincy Hyde won their game against their undefeated competitors by only two points leading a very emotional victory.
Watching Coach Hyde’s team win made the passionate and hardworking 6th-grade team want to win their championship game even more. With inspirational pep talks from Coach Kevin Toliver and the respect this team has for one another, they had no problem going out and playing with confidence.
Once the final buzzer went off, and the game was done Germantown HEAT flooded the court with nothing but love and excitement knowing that they had won the Rising Star Championship, by a final score of 38 to 29.
Germantown HEAT is starting to prep for another season of basketball with tryouts coming up for all ages later this month. More info on Germantown HEAT is available at their website.
