Retro Fitness Closes Without Warning, Leaves Customers Wondering

Retro Fitness in Germantown was open Friday and closed — seemingly for good — on Saturday over the President’s Day Weekend.

The gym which was located in the lower-level of the Germantown Square Shopping Center on Great Seneca Highway, which is also home to the Dutch Market, was closed Saturday morning. Movers were seen moving the exercise equipment out overnight during Saturday of President’s Day Weekend.

Gym goers looking for a workout the Saturday morning were met with windows covered in brown paper, chains, and locks on the doors, and a sign simply reading “Gym Closed.” Gym members were also left to wonder what will happen to any monies they paid in memberships for the remaining 10 days of February and any prepaid months. The closure was apparently a surprise to employees at the

Phone calls to the gym were met with a message saying the number is no longer in service. Each Retro Fitness location is independently owned and operated by a franchisee, while attempts to reach the owner of Retro Fitness were unsuccessful, Germantown Pulse did reach out to Arkansas-based ABC Financial Inc., which is the franchisor of Retro Fitness. ABC Financial provides management products and services to fitness club owners across the country.

An email to ABC Financial Chief Revenue Officer Steve Ayers resulting in a statement from the Retro Fitness Corporate Vice President of Marketing, KT Remus, “Corporately, we manage the brand and provide support to our network, but the decision to close this location was solely the local franchisee’s decision. Apparently, the location was closed due to some personal financial hardships.”

Initially, Retro Fitness was hoping to find another franchisee to take over the gym Remus said that Retro Fitness will continue to work toward getting the Germantown location opened under new ownership, however, in the interim, the company said all members of the Retro Fitness Germantown location will be refunded for days they were not able to use the gym.

“All members will be refunded by our billing company, ABC Financial, for all unserviced days of membership,” according to Remus. “Meaning, if they were billed February 15, they prepaid for gym access for February 15 to March 15 — they will be refunded for the pro-rated membership dues for the days they pre-paid for but cannot use due to the closing. Those who pre-paid for their membership for the year will likewise be refunded the pro-rated amount.”

Members wishing to get an update as to their refund status can reach out to ABC Financial directly by emailing customercare@abcfinancial.com or calling 888-827-9262.
