Lady Coyotes Look to Finish Strong Despite Loss to QO

As the regular season begins to wind down, the Clarksburg girls’ team hopes to finish out the last three games with victories to remain among the top teams in their division.

The Lady Coyotes missed a chance to snatch a win from rival Quince Orchard. Instead, the girls fell four points short losing 56-52 at home Tuesday night. The loss drops their regular season record to 10-7, keeping them just within arm’s reach of the division leading Gaithersburg at 13-5. However, it also kept the QO within the same arm’s reach, as the Lady Cougars improved to 10-8 on the season.

Tuesday’s game was close throughout, with Coach Cecilia Natoli’s Clarksburg team leading by a bucket at the end of the first quarter, and down by a bucket at halftime. The Lady Coyotes managed to keep pace in the second half but were unable to catch up.

Clarksburg had three girls in double-digits and got scoring from eight different players. The Lady Coyotes were led by junior Sunny Paul, who had 12 points. Also in the double-figure club were senior Allie Janowiak with 11 points and freshman forward Brooke Anya with 10 points. Starters Phylicia McInnis and Trinity Wright added five points apiece.

On the other end, Quince Orchard was led by Danni Lehner who had 13 points, followed by Alexa San Martin with 11 points, and Destini Kelley with 10 points. Maggie Regan also added eight points for the Cougars.

The Lady Coyotes have three games left in the regular season all home games. Their toughest test of the three games comes this Friday, Feb. 10 as they host 12-5 Blair. They have a Valentine’s Day date with 5-12 Kennedy at Clarksburg and finish the regular season hosting 2-18 Blake on Feb. 17. While Quince Orchard has just two games remain as they will host 5-12 Kennedy and 10-7 Tuscarora.

However, the team that both QO and Clarksburg are chasing for the division title, Gaithersburg, will play winless Einstein, 11-4 Wootton, and 5-14 Magruder to end the regular season.
