Seneca Names Scholar-Athletes of Month of December

February 3, 2017

Jesse Irvin, Athletic Director at Seneca Valley, announced that junior Chinenye Nwachukwu and freshman Diego Turcios have been named the Seneca Valley Scholar-Athletes for the Month of December.

Chinenye Nwachukwu is a starter on the girls’ varsity basketball team.  She is a second-year varsity player and played JV as a freshman.  She plays volleyball in the fall as well.

Chinenye is currently carrying a 4.0 GPA.  She also participates in Chorus and performed in the past winter concert while juggling school work, basketball practice/games and maintains straight A’s. “She has a positive attitude and has improved her basketball skills to become a starter this season,” said Irvin. “She is a joy to coach and works hard every day at practice and with her teammates. She encourages her teammates positively and shows great sportsmanship on and off the court.”

Diego Turcios is a freshman who is an active member of the wrestling team, regularly attends practices and study halls. He hesitantly joined the wrestling team, and his involvement has now exploded.

“He takes the time to help his family understand English and translate it, to find out what they want and need,” said Irvin. Also, Diego is a team player who has done whatever was needed for the team and has become a very well respected member of the wrestling team and student body while maintaining an excellent 3.71grade point average.

“To help the team gain experience sometimes, Diego will sit out competition or move up a weight class in order to allow others to wrestle. He recently dislocated his shoulder in a wrestling match and is now on the road to recovery working on his physical therapy,” said Irvin.   Even though he cannot compete, he still attends practice and has stepped up to help keep score during our matches. He really makes an effort to better himself, teammates, and classmates.  Diego has always been positive and has great quiet self-confidence and is growing into a responsible young man.”
