Woman Sentenced to Life in Prison for Killing on Germantown Street

January 24, 2017

Raminder Kaur was sentenced to life in prison for the 2013 murder of Preeta Gabba on Crystal Rock Drive in Germantown.

Kaur, now 66, will spend her remaining years in prison after Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Michael D. Mason sentenced her to life in prison yesterday in Rockville.

Kaur and her husband Baldeo Taneja, both of Nashville, Tenn., conspired to kill, Taneja’s ex-wife. Taneja and Kaur had grown angry about Tanjea’s alimony for his ex-wife. They plotted to kill Gabba, who lived in Germantown, during a trip to Montgomery County for an Amway conference in Rockville. According to authorities, it was Kaur who pulled out a revolver and shot Gabba three times as she walked to her bus stop on Crystal Rock Drive.

Two days before the shooting in 2013, Taneja had been scheduled to be in court in Montgomery County over the back alimony and division of other property but failed to appear, police said.

“She was the executioner in this case,” Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy said Monday. “And she will die in prison.”

Both Kaur and Taneja were convicted in 2014. The Maryland Public Defender’s Office argued that one of their lawyers provided ineffective counsel to Kaur and requested a new trial for Kaur. That request led to a retrial. In November 2016, Kaur was convicted again on the murder charge, as well as on conspiracy and handgun counts.
