Coyotes Fall to Trojans in Battle of ‘Burgs

The Clarksburg Coyotes lost to Gaithersburg, 72-64, Tuesday night as the Trojans took the first round of the Battle of the ‘Burgs. It was the Trojans first win of the season.

The Trojans led 29-28 at halftime and took advantage of a low-scoring third quarter by Clarksburg to take expand the lead. The Coyotes were only able to score seven points in the third quarter, while Gaithersburg dropped 16 points to extend the lead to 10 going into the final quarter.

Gaithersburg was led by freshman forward Kendrick Tchoua, who scored 28 points on 11 field goals, and shot six-for-seven from the foul line. It was Tchoua’s 12 points in the third which allowed the Trojans to pull away and secure their first victory of the season. The Trojans had two other players in double-digits, seniors Sam Stephens and Paris Dyson-Dimes had 17 points apiece.

Clarksburg had three players in double-digits in the loss. Senior Ian Krishnan had 19 points, including three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to keep pace with Gaithersburg. The Coyotes made nine 3-pointers in the game, Krishnan shot five of them. Michael Winterburn had 14 points, and M. Stephan Hamilton added 12 points for the Coyotes.

The loss drops Clarksburg to 6-4 and gets Gaithersburg off out of the winless column to 1-8. Clarksburg will host 1-8 Northwest on Friday night. The Jags are coming off a 53-40 loss to Quince Orchard on Tuesday. Gaithersburg will host Watkins Mill on Friday.
