Lady Jags Maul Seneca Valley 73-41

January 7, 2017

In their first meeting of the season, the Northwest Lady Jaguars mauled their cross-town rivals from Seneca Valley 73 – 41 on Friday night.

The Lady Jags jumped out to an early lead using staunch defense to force the Lady Eagles to turn the ball over, which lead to a 22-7 first quarter lead. The Northwest girls never looked back.

Led by seniors Alexis Mack and Mariah Ellis, who scored 21 points each, the Lady Jags earned their third victory of the season. Mack nailed three 3-pointers in the first quarter to stake the Jags to the early lead. Northwest also got 11 points from freshman Jordyn Herwood.

The Lady Jags shot 63 percent from the free throw line, hitting 12 of 19 shots. The Lady Eagles shot just 44 percent from the foul line, making 12 of 27 free throws.

Seneca Valley was led by sophomore guard, Nya Martinez who scored 14 points in the contest as the Lady Eagles tried to battle back, but the damage was done early in the game. Despite outscoring the Jags 27-24 in the second half, Seneca Valley could not overcome the 49-15 halftime deficit.

The win moves the Lady Jags to 3-5 on the season. The Lady Jags will host bitter rivals Quince Orchard on Tuesday, Jan 10. The QO Lady Cougars are 4-4 with wins over Magruder, Einstein, Rockville and Springbrook.

Seneca Valley continues to search for their first win of the season. The Lady Eagles are in action again on Tuesday at 7-2 Watkins Mill. Watkins Mill has wins over Walter Johnson, Wheaton, Magruder, and Blake, but are coming off a lost to Poolesville on Friday.
