Area Residents Hit Big in Maryland Lottery
Two UpCounty men have been lucky and won a combined total of $100,800 playing the Maryland lottery.
The first, Damascus resident named Jorge Coronel was playing Maryland Lottery scratch-offs with a co-worker during lunch back in late November when he won a top prize of $50,000 playing the Home Run Riches game, according the Maryland Lottery.
Coronel and his co-worker were enjoying lunch in the diner at Damascus Fast Fuels in Damascus when Jorge encountered lottery luck. They had each decided to add some scratch-off fun to their meal and bought some instant tickets.
The married father of two boys had hit a home run playing the $5 scratch-off. The Damascus resident plans to pay bills with his prize and buy his wife of 16 years a wonderful present for her upcoming birthday. The 47-year-old would like to buy a truck, he said, and will treat his family to a nice holiday.
Also celebrating his win is the lucky retailer. The Montgomery County business, located at 9871 Main Street in Damascus, will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling a top-prize winner in the game. The Home Run Riches game, which was reissued because of brisk sales, still has two unclaimed $50,000 top prizes on the two versions of the game on sale around the state. There are also thousands of unclaimed prizes ranging from $10 to $5,000.
The second big winner from the area is a Germantown resident, who chose to remain unidentified, but claims he got his winning number from a movie. He won a $50,000 Bonus Match 5 top prize plus $800 in the same drawing with a variation of the same lucky numbers.
The 56-year-old played the lucky string of numbers consistently for at least a decade before enjoying his Hollywood-style ending at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. The Germantown resident bought his lucky $6 ticket at Walnut Hill Exxon in Gaithersburg for the Dec. 14 drawing.
“I saw the numbers in a movie, and the 3-9-13-25-32 I played on Bonus Match 5 was some variation of the numbers in the film,” said the winner.
The auto adjuster said his lucky numbers led to prizes several times during his years of hoping for a top-prize win. “I’ve matched three or four numbers several times, but never all five,” he said.
He discovered the win when he checked the winning numbers on his smartphone on the morning after the drawing. Unfortunately, his wife wasn’t home to share the excitement. “I’ll think of a clever way to tell her I won,” said the happy husband.
He plans to use his $50,800 winnings for home improvements and hopes his lucky numbers win one of the Lottery’s other jackpot games.
Also celebrating his success is his lucky Montgomery County retailer. Walnut Hill Exxon, which is located at 16425 South Frederick Road in Gaithersburg, will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling a top-prize ticket in the Bonus Match 5 game.
