Firefighters Rescue Woman from House Fire

An elderly woman was rescued from her home on Wednesday morning as fire spread through her house on Watkins Road in Damascus.

Montgomery County Firefighters were called to 9430 Watkins Road for the report of heavy smoke coming from the house shortly before 11:30 am on Wednesday, Dec. 20.

According to MCFRS senior spokesman Pete Piringer, “Firefighters arrived on the scene and discovered smoke coming from the house. Since no one met the firefighters upon arrival, they had had reason to believe someone may still be inside. As they extinguished several small fires, firefighters located an adult female and assisted her outside.”

The woman was evaluated by EMS and transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Piringer said that she likely suffered from smoke inhalation from exposure to the smoke conditions in the house.

Piringer said the cause of the fire was still under investigation. He said that several small fires did minimal damage. Firefighters reported fire in the garage and the living room of the house. Fire Investigators estimate damage about $5,000 to the structure and $500 to contents. No firefighters were injured fighting the fire, and Piringer did not believe that the residents would be displaced as a result of the fire and damage.

Watkins Road was closed between Wildcat Road and Wild Hunt Drive for about an hour as firefighters extinguished the house fire.
