Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Germantown

December 16, 2016

The bitter cold has settled over Germantown as residents awoke to temperatures in the teens on Friday. To make matters worse, overnight on Friday residents should expect a trio of wintery hazards in the form of snow, sleet, and freezing rain.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory beginning at Midnight tonight (Friday) until noon on Saturday, Dec. 17. While the wintery precipitation will not be significant, it will create hazards on the roads. The National Weather Service says snow and sleet accumulations of less than one inch along with a tenth of an inch of glaze ice will coat Germantown and the entire Montgomery County area.

According to the NWS, “Snow and sleet will overspread the region after midnight tonight, then change to freezing rain before dawn Saturday morning. The freezing rain will change to rain by noon on Saturday.”

The NWS expects temperatures to begin to rise overnight as the bitter artic cold exits the area. Temps on Friday night are expected to be in the upper 20s, rising into the lower 30s on Saturday morning but not above the freezing mark until sometime afternoon on Saturday.

The light snow, sleet, and freezing rain will make travel hazardous on walkways and roadways overnight. “Drivers should be prepared for slippery road and limited visibilities,” said the NWS statement.
