Rain Slicked Roads Lead Fatal Crash in Gaithersburg and other Traffic Incidents

November 29, 2016

Tuesdays scattered rain showers created some problems for Germantown drivers. Having received very little rain in the last 60 days, 0.92 inches of precipitation since Sept. 31, according to Weather Underground’s station at the Montgomery County Airpark in Gaithersburg, the roads in the UpCounty were slick which resulted in a number traffic incidents. While the Germantown area received just 0.30 inches of rain Monday night into Tuesday evening, it was enough to create problems on area roads.
Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department's Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating a fatal collision that occurred this morning in Gaithersburg. Fire and Rescue personnel responded to the intersection of Snouffer School Road and Centerway Road for the report of a serious collision which occurred at about 11:15 am this morning.
The collision resulted in the death of Sultana Firdous Dasti, age 71, of Game Preserve Road. Police said that the victim was in the passenger seat of a 2000 Acura TL that was making a left turn from northbound Snouffer School Road onto westbound Centerway Road when a 2000 Dodge Durango that was traveling southbound on Snouffer School Road approaching Centerway Road. The Acura and the Durango collided in the intersection.
The driver of the Acura, identified as Faisal Munir Dasti, age 42, of Brenish Drive in Gaithersburg, was not injured in the collision, however, the passenger was transported to an area hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the Durango, identified as James Rudnick II, age 46, of Randolph Road in Wheaton, was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Later that in the day, at about 2:00 pm, Montgomery County Police and Fire Rescue units responded to report of a car which had gone off the road and into a rainwater containment area near the 20400 block of Seneca Meadows Parkway.

Officers at the scene said the driver, a young female, lost control of a blue Hyundai Sonata while traveling westbound toward the Wegmans. She crossed the median and jumped the curb ending up 50-feet down a hill and in the drainage culvert of a rainwater containment area. The driver was transported by MCFRS EMS to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
MCPD and MCFRS also responded to collisions at Father Hurley Blvd. near the northbound lanes of I-270, another at Frederick Road and Father Hurley Boulevard, as well as a crash at Watkins Mill Road and Green River Terrace. None of these traffic incidents resulted in serious, life-threatening injuries.
Electrical issues due to arcing wires along Waring Station Road created power outages in some sections of town. The loss of power caused temporary outages of traffic lights at Clopper Road and Mateny Road as well as Clopper Road and Waring Station Road on Tuesday morning.
