Montgomery County Sheriff Darren M. Popkin has announced that as of October 2, Thomas Manion has been appointed Director of the Montgomery County Family Justice Center located in Rockville.
The Montgomery County FJC is a community-wide collaboration of public and private agencies in a centralized location, near the courts and public transportation that assists domestic violence victims and their families. Co-located within this facility are representatives from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s office, police department, State’s Attorney’s Office, Health Department, and private non-profit agencies.
Manion holds a master’s degree in Forensic Psychology, with a specialization in suicide and violence prevention. He has been with the Sheriff’s Office working at the Family Justice Center as the Acting Director for the past year, and the Domestic Violence Coordinating Council Program Manager for the prior two years. In addition to supporting the work of the FJC, he was responsible for spearheading coordination efforts for the Annual Choose Respect Conference, which promotes healthy dating behavior by Montgomery County teens and attempts to break the cycle of domestic violence.
While pursuing his graduate degree, Manion worked in the Family and Sexual Violence Division of the U.S. Naval Criminal Investigative Services. Post-graduation, he worked as an investigator for a suicide prevention project funded by the U.S. Department of Transpiration, which looked into recent surges in suicide deaths by rail/transit in the country.
With his specialized background involving family violence, and his involvement with inter-agency activities, Manion is ideally suited to lead the Montgomery County Family Justice Center, according to a press release from the Sheriff’s Department.
The Montgomery County FJC seeks to alleviate some the burdens of domestic violence victims by co-locating needed services and providing assistance for the multiple challenges faced by victims and their families. Instead of having to walk, drive, or take public transportation from one place to another, repeat their story over and over again, the FJC model brings services to families in one safe, convenient, and family-friendly location.
