Blizzard Forces Pregnant Germantown Woman to Take Fire Engine to Hospital

January 26, 2016

Early Saturday morning as the Blizzard of ’16 was battering Germantown with heavy snow and gusting winds a pregnant Germantown woman began to go into labor and had to be taken to the hospital in a fire truck.

Montgomery County Fire Rescue senior spokesman Pete Piringer told the Associated Press that paramedics were called to Duhart Road, near Kingsview Middle School, in Germantown early Saturday morning for a woman in labor.

The pregnant woman had attempted to get to the hospital on her own, but her vehicle became stuck in the quickly accumulating snow near her home. According to reports, MCFRS personnel loaded the woman into an ambulance, but it too ran into problems when a snow chain broke, and it became mired in the snow.

Since plows and the military Humvees – on loan from the Maryland National Guard -- were already on service calls in other areas, it was determined that she would grab a ride to the hospital aboard one of the MCFRS fire engines, according to Piringer.

The local woman was taken to Holy Cross Germantown via fire truck, where she gave birth to a healthy 7-pound, 15-ounce baby girl at 11:18 am on Saturday, Jan. 23, according to hospital spokesman Yolanda Gaskins. Mother and daughter are doing well.
