Suspected Drunk Driver Plunges into Potomac River off White’s Ferry

September 30, 2016

White’s Ferry was closed this morning after a suspected drunk driver crashed through the ferry gates and drove into the Potomac River.

According to Montgomery County Police spokesman, Capt. Paul Starks, shortly after 1:30 am Friday morning, a 26-year-old Gaithersburg man smashed through the gates on the actual ferry barge, drove across the closed and empty ferry, crashed through the gates at the other end of the barge, and plunged his car into the Potomac River.

White’s Ferry stops traversing the Potomac at 11:00 pm nightly.

The driver was able to extricate himself from his car, but his shouts for help were heard by ferry captain Josh Webster who lives in an apartment above the White’s Ferry Store. He was able the help the man find his footing and walk out of the river.

However, due to the location of the submerged car White’s Ferry was not open to transport commuters across the Potomac River for a few hours this morning as crews worked to remove the vehicle from the river. The ferry was reopened by 8:40 am Friday morning.

The driver has been arrested, charged, and released, according to Starks.
