BOE Appoints Architect for McAuliffe Elementary Addition Project

September 28, 2016

The Montgomery County Board of Education has appointed an architectural firm for the planned addition to S. Christa McAuliffe Elementary School.

The appointment happened at the Board of Education meeting held on Monday, Sept. 26. The Board appointed the Baltimore-based firm of Hord Coplan Macht, Inc. to provide professional and technical services during the design and construction phases for the school’s addition project.

MCPS projections indicate enrollment at S. Christa McAuliffe Elementary School, which is located at 12500 Wisteria Drive in Germantown, will exceed capacity by 92 seats or more by 2022, according to the MCPS Capital Improvements Program Master Plan. “An FY 2017 appropriation is approved for planning funds to begin the architectural design for a classroom addition. Relocatable classrooms will be utilized until additional capacity can be added,” according to the CIP Master Plan.

According to the resolution approved by the Board on Monday, “The preliminary construction cost estimate for the project is approximately $9,889,000.” The Board approved the signing of a contract with Hord Coplan Macht, Inc. for $675,290 for professional architectural and engineering services for the S. Christa McAuliffe Elementary School addition project.

The addition project at Christa McAuliffe Elementary School is scheduled for completion in August of 2019.
