Strong Second Half Propels Seneca Valley Over Rockville, 42-13

The second half of Friday night’s Seneca Valley’s game against Rockville was very different from the first half. In the second half, Seneca Valley scored 28 points to beat the Rams 42-13, but it was the first half that concerned Seneca’s Head Coach Fred Kim.

“I told the team it was the hardest 42-13 win that I can ever recall,” said Kim after the game. “We started out very slow in the first half, with multiple penalties and a turnover. For whatever reason, we just weren’t in sync.”

The Screaming Eagles scored twice in the first half. Senior running back Adrian Platt scored the first of his five touchdowns on the night, and senior quarterback Zack Robinson scampered for another. The Rams would get on the board with a long pass to set the score at 14-6 at halftime.

“Rockville came in fired up and ready to play, and they did a great job, and they just took it to us,” said Kim. “I think they surprised our kids. They punched us in the mouth, and we had wake up, and dig into some guys at halftime. We made some adjustments and tweaks and came out as a totally different team in the second half.”

The Eagles came out and scored on their first two drives in the second half, as Platt ran for two more touchdowns to extend the lead to 28-13. Platt, who broke the school single-game touchdown record at Churchill last week with six, added five more to his career total as he ran for 245 yards on 25 carries against the Rams.

Although his team won, Coach Kim said that his Eagles will need to find their focus if they hope to make the playoffs is the wild 3A West region. “Right now, we are sixth in the region, and there are several undefeated teams,” said Kim. “The 3A West is not easy, and we can’t afford to make any mistakes. The region is tough, with Damascus, Oakdale, and South Hagerstown, and now Tuscarora and Thomas Johnson is coming alive. We need to take it one game at a time and not look down the road, and hope that we improve. We had an awful practice week, with tons of distractions, including guys dealing with injuries and some being forced to sit on the bench for violating team rules. We have a good football team, but we don’t have a very deep team, and if one thing goes wrong, it makes it very tough.”

The 3-1 Screaming Eagles will host 0-4 Magruder next Friday. The Colonels are coming off a 28-7 defeat at the hands of Watkins Mill.
