Northwest Grad Makes Semifinals of Olympic Kayak Competition

Ashley Nee, a 2008 graduate of Northwest High School and the lone woman on the 2016 U.S. Kayak slalom team, has advanced to the semifinals in the women’s kayak singles K1 slalom at the Rio Olympics, after not qualifying for the previous two Olympic Games. Nee will compete again in the semifinals on Thursday at 11:15 pm.

Nee, a Darnestown, resident placed ninth overall after Monday’s preliminary competition. A strong performance in her second run of the day helped her move up to be among the semifinalists. Her best qualification time was 105.60 seconds, earned on a solid second run. She finished her first in 113.15 seconds. She was among 21 athletes competing for 15 semifinal spots on Monday. Her total score for the preliminary competition was 1:45.60.

She will have to find a way to take more time off her qualifying runs if she wants to end up on with a medal. Nee’s 105.6 was enough to allow her to advance, the fastest overall time on the whitewater course was Italy’s Stefanie Horn, who ran the course in just 99.07 seconds and finished with a 1:39.07.
