NWS Issues Heat Advisory for Saturday

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Germantown and all of Montgomery County from noon until 8:00 pm tonight.

“Heat index values around 105 degrees due to temperatures in the mid- to upper-90s and dewpoints near 70,” said the National Weather Service advisory.

“A Heat Advisory means that a period of high temperatures is expected,” said the NWS. “The combination of high temperatures and high humidity will create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.”

Wear light weight or loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water, suggested the NWS. The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, in association for the Maryland Department of the Environment has issued a Code Orange Air Quality Alert for Saturday, July 23 in the D.C. Metro area. A Code Orange Air Quality Alert means the air pollution concentrations within the region may have become unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children, people suffering from asthma, heart disease, or lung disease, and the elderly. The effect of air pollution can be minimized by avoiding strenuous activity or exercise outdoors.

Montgomery County offers a number of tips on how to stay safe in the heat.
