Seneca Valley Graduate Drowns in Lake Linganore

An 18-year-old member of the Class of 2016 from Seneca Valley High School drowned Friday while swimming in Lake Linganore in Frederick County, according to authorities.

Andrew Dantzler, of Germantown, was recovered from the lake and pronounced dead around 7:45 pm, according to Kevin Fox, a spokesman for Frederick County Fire and Rescue Services.

Dantzler, who graduated from Seneca Valley in June, was a member of the Screaming Eagle varsity basketball team which made a deep run into the Maryland State Playoffs last season culminating with a loss in the 3A State championship game.

According to Fox, Dantzler and friends had been swimming at Nightingale Beach on Lake Linganore, when the young man decided to swim across the lake. “Our initial reports were that he was attempting to swim across the lake,” said Fox. “I am not sure if it was when he was coming back or going across when he became distressed and began calling for help.” He then became fatigued and vanished beneath the water’s surface.

Lake Linganore is a 210-acre reservoir built on Linganore Creek. It is the largest privately owned lake in the state.

Fox said that bystanders at the lake attempted to reach to offer aid to Dantzler but were unsuccessful. At the same time, other folks on scene ran to a neighboring house to call 9-1-1. Fox said the initial call came into Frederick County Fire at 3:43 pm on Friday.

According to Fox, five different boat crews from three counties, as well the Maryland State Police Helicopter were called to assist in the search. “Swift water rescue technicians from three different counties, as well as rescue divers at the scene,” said Fox. “We had personnel from New Market, Woodsboro, Independent Hose, Gamber Fire Company from Carroll County, and Savage Fire Company from Howard County.”

Fox said that search was hampered by bad visibility in the lake. “There was definitely a visibility issue. Visibility was poor. We attempted to use the State Police helicopter, but they were unable to locate the individual.”

Searchers recovered Dantzler’s body at 7:45 pm on Friday.

Seneca Valley Athletics Director Jesse Irvin tweeted this late last night that “the Seneca Valley Family lost one of our own this afternoon. Please pray for the family of 2016 Grad Andrew Dantzler, who passed away today.”
