SoccerPlex Improves Background Checks for Coaches and Employees



After recent reports of a soccer coach being arrested for attempting to lure a 12-year-old for sex, the Maryland SoccerPlex, in Germantown, has upgraded their background checks for coaches, employees, and volunteers.

The Maryland SoccerPlex has become the first organization of its kind in the state of Maryland to implement a continual monitoring program for a coach, volunteer, and employee background checks. After an extensive review of available vendors and products, SSCI was selected based on the strength of its ongoing monthly monitoring and notification process, according to a press release.

“The security and safety of our youth players has always been our top priority and when it came to something as important as background checks we felt SSCI’s new technology will provide our patrons added peace of mind,” said Maryland SoccerPlex Executive Director Trish Heffelfinger. “We were using the latest technology for our annual background checks on employees, volunteers, and coaches but it only provided a snapshot at that moment. We were actively looking for a nationwide continual monitoring system and the new technology SSCI’s was testing fit our needs.”


Prior to changing background systems, the SoccerPlex and its Soccer Association of Montgomery, more widely known as SAM Soccer, had previously required only one annual background checks on most of its coaches and workers, prior to the beginning of the fall soccer season.
