Thousands of Potomac Edison customers in Germantown, Boyds, Clarksburg, Damascus, and other UpCounty Montgomery locales are without power.
Almost all of Potomac Edison customers in Germantown (11,933), Clarksburg (7,624), Damascus (5,047), Boyds (1,226), along with customers in Gaithersburg, Comus, Dickerson, Poolesville, and Barnesville are without power. According to Potomac Edison's Outage Map 89 percent of their service area is without power. Service is estimated be restored between 5:00 pm and 5:30 pm. Large portions of Potomac Edison customers in Frederick, Howard, and Carroll counties are also part of the outage.
It’s not yet clear what is causing the outage, but Potomac Edison’s website says power is expected to be restored between 5:00 pm and 5:30 pm for those affected areas. According to Potomac Edison’s Twitter account “Crews are investigating a transmission line issue.” Another tweet read, “Crews are investigating the cause of the outage & working as quickly/safely as possible to resolve.” Potomac Edison customers are asked to call 888-LIGHTSS (888-544-4877) to report your outage.
As a result of the power outage, the Damascus Senior Center is closed, and the Germantown and Damascus Public Libraries are open but only on limited basis.
Montgomery County Police said they were aware of the outage and that traffic signals at many UpCounty intersections were not working and reminded drivers to treat those intersections as four-way stops. Montgomery County Emergency Management tweeted that they were aware of the outage.
