Spirit Drop First Game of 2016 Season at Portland
After sitting along in the top spot in the National Women’s Soccer League for the first five weeks of the season, the Washington Spirit are suddenly finding less and less separation between themselves and the rest of the league.
The Spirit suffered their first loss of the season on the West Coast Saturday night as they fell to the Portland Thorns FC 4-1. While the Spirit remain at the top of the leaderboard, they now share the top spot with the Chicago Red Stars, who defeated the Seattle Reign 2-1 Sunday evening.
The Spirit and Red Stars are tied at 13 points. However, the Portland victory earns them three points and puts them just one point behind the leaders at 12 points. The Thorns share the second spot with NWSL expansion team the Orlando Pride, who earned three points with a 1-0 victory over the Houston Dash on Saturday night.
