Germantown Community Forum to Discuss Crime in Town Center

The Germantown Library will host a Community Forum and Town Hall Meeting to address crime in the Germantown Town Center on Wednesday, May 18 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Montgomery County Police 5th District Commander Captain David Gillespie will join Councilmember Craig Rice, and local Maryland State delegates and senators and other community leaders to discuss the ongoing issues of crime in the Central Business District.

The Germantown Pulse has been reporting on the rash of often violent criminal activity by groups of teens, and especially females in recent weeks. The ongoing problem of teenage girls beating and robbing people in Germantown’s Central Business District continued last week as a teenage girl was attacked by two teenage females in the parking lot of a fast food chain in broad daylight on a Sunday afternoon, on May 1.

The problem dates back to early March when Commander Gillespie told Germantown Pulse that MCPD had been dealing with large groups of teenagers gathering and creating problems in the Town Center area, which forced the 5th District Commander to increase patrols in the area.

While the increased police presence and vigilance by community residents and merchants have had the desired effect on a large portion of the youths causing trouble, the problem persists. Last week, Capt. Gillespie said that police had seen a large decrease in the number of calls in the area, however, a small group of teens continue to cause trouble and commit crimes in the area.

Wednesday’s meeting will address community concerns and look for solutions to this ongoing problem in the Germantown Central Business District.
