Firefighters Respond to Homeless Camp Fire

Montgomery County Fire Marshalls are investigating a fire at a homeless camp behind the Fox Chapel Shopping Center at 19721 Frederick Road, behind the Gold’s Gym.

The initial call came in as a brush fire in the wooded area between the rear of the shopping center and Minstrel Tune Drive, in the vicinity of Princess Avenue of the Middlebrook Mobile Home Park. Arriving units reported a fully-involved camp area, which was apparently being used as a shelter by a homeless person or persons. There were no injuries reported. Firefighters discovered a propane tank in the area of the campsite.

The camp was located down in a ravine, up against the retaining wall built to support the shopping center and parking lot above. The smoky fire was less than 300-feet from the mobile homes in the trailer park.

Firefighters extinguished the fire and called for the Fire Marshall to investigate the incident as to determine the cause and origin of the fire, according to Pete Piringer, MCFRS senior spokesman. Fire officials have not released the findings of that investigation.
