Northwest Blanks Seneca Valley in Regular Season Closers

In their last scheduled regular season outings, the Northwest Jaguars baseball and softball teams shut out cross-town rivals Monday afternoon. On the Seneca Valley baseball field the Jags earned their seventh straight victory with a 12-0 win while on the softball diamond the Lady Jags earned their eleventh straight victory and third straight shutout by beating the Lady Eagles 11-0.

The Lady Jags got things started early with a grand slam from junior Alexis Mack. She took a 2-2 pitch from Seneca Valley’s Whitney Dickerson deep to center field to stake the Jags with a 4-0 lead. In the second inning, the Lady Jags patience at the plate, combined with timely base hits allowed them to get bases loaded which led to five runs in the inning, two scoring on single by sophomore Kaylan King. After two innings the Lady Jags led 9-0.

Seneca Valley struggled to get base runners off Northwest’s senior pitcher Bridgette Barbour, who did not give up a walk, struck out nine batters, and allowed just three hits over five innings. Seneca’s Dickerson struck out three, walked six batters, and allowed 10 hits over five innings. The Jags added two more runs in the fifth inning on base hits by sophomores Chloe Hickman and Karlie Stanford, and a sacrifice out by Barbour. An Alexis Mack base hit scored Stanford to give Northwest an 11-0 victory.

The 14-1 Lady Jags are primed for a playoff run. As the top seed in their 4A West bracket, they have earned a first-round playoff bye and will host the winner of Friday’s playoff game between Wootton and Gaithersburg on Monday, May 16 at 4:00 pm at Northwest.
