Civil War Era Hot Air Balloon to Highlight Poolesville in History Day This Saturday



The Town of Poolesville will host Poolesville in History Day this Saturday, May 7. Residents and visitors will be transported back through time and will embark on a journey through Poolesville’s historic timeline, complete with War reenactments and era attire.

Events of the day will take place from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm at Whalen Commons at 19701 Fisher Avenue in Poolesville.

Poolesville in History Day’s main feature presentation will be the launch of Professor Thaddeus Lowe’s Civil War observation hot air balloon at 8:00 am. Lowe was the father of the American Aeronautical Corporation and was said to have been the inspiration for the character Oz, from L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Other highlights of the event include; Walking tours of historic Poolesville homes; the return of the Piscataway-Canoy Native American Tribe that historically inhabited the area; a visit with Abe Lincoln; Historical Entertainment from Jubilee Voices of the Washington Revel singing the story of a Poolesville slave; Historical lunch featuring Civil War Menu and attire at Bassett’s Restaurant; Poolesville founder John Poole, Jr.; and the USS Constellation Ship’s Company. The USS Constellation is the historical ship which is docked as a museum in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.

Poolesville in History Day is being coordinated through Historic Medley District, Inc., with support from the Town of Poolesville and local business sponsors.
