MoCo State’s Attorney John McCarthy Announces Cancer Diagnosis

State's Attorney for Montgomery County, John J. McCarthy, announced Wednesday that he has recently learned that he has been diagnosed with cancer of the neck and will be taking a brief medical leave, according to a press release from the State’s Attorney’s Office.

He is being seen by a team of doctors from Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, said the release. McCarthy's surgical team meets in conference later this month to finalize treatment options, and McCarthy is confident that he will be completely recovered by this summer, according to the press release.

The State’s Attorney continues to manage the operations of the office. It is anticipated after his surgery he will take a brief medical leave. Deputy State’s Attorney’s Laura Chase and Peter Feeney will take over for a few weeks while McCarthy recovers.

During those weeks, McCarthy stated: “The people of Montgomery County should rest assured that Deputy State's Attorneys Laura Chase and Peter Feeney, prosecutors and staff are fully prepared to diligently continue the difficult and important work of keeping our community safe.”

McCarthy was first elected to the post as Montgomery County State’s Attorney in 2006 and then reelected in 2010. He served as deputy state’s attorney for 10 years before taking over the office. He has been working in the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office since 1982.
