Councilmember Rice Offers High School Students Chance to Be 'Councilmember For a Day'

High school students and middle school students who will be in high school in the fall have a chance to experience life as a member of the Montgomery County Council through a new program sponsored by District 2 Councilmember and Germantown resident Craig Rice.

“As Chair of the Education Committee, I’m always looking for ways to empower young people to get more involved in government,” said Rice on his Council website. “This year, I’m holding a contest for high school students. One lucky student will become “Councilmember for a day” and shadow me at the Montgomery County Council.”

Students interested in the opportunity to be Councilmember for a Day should either submit a YouTube video, (no longer than two minutes) or a written essay (no more than 500 words) answering one the following questions:

Why do you think Montgomery County is a great place to live and to get an education?

What public policy issues are important to you?

What can County Government do to get young people more interested in local issues?

Deadline for entries is June 15. To submit your entry go to Councilmember for a Day. For more information contact Sonya Healy or 240-777-7926.

Ten students will be selected as finalists based on the quality of their entries. These 10 students will receive proclamations from the Council, and one student will be selected as Councilmember for a Day.
