Police Confirm Assault at Safeway in Germantown

Montgomery County Police were called to the Safeway in Germantown Town Center for a report of two people fighting in the store at 11:09 am Wednesday morning.

Officers from the Fifth District responded to the store at 19718 Germantown Road, but by the time they arrived all persons involved in the fight had fled the area. Police found no victim but did find evidence of a struggle as grocery displays were de-shelved. Police also found a cell phone, as well as, blood drops and smudges on the Safeway floor in some aisles in the store. Police also closed one entrance to the store. The store remained open.

According to a police spokesperson, investigating officers have learned that two male subjects were involved in a “physical altercation involving a knife” that began outside the Safeway store and continued inside the store. As of 1:30 pm, police could not confirm that a stabbing had occurred at the location.

Police remained on the scene at the Safeway this afternoon, and portions of the store are taped off with crime scene tape as investigators continue to unravel the details of the incident. As of 1:30 pm police did not have any suspects but were talking to a number of persons of interest in connection with this incident, according to an MCPD spokesperson.

This incident is the latest in a rash of assaults in the Germantown Town Center area, which prompted District Five Commander David Gillespie to increase patrols in the area in late March.
