Northwest Girls LAX Defeats Clarksburg in Close Contest

The Northwest Lady Jags are off to a 3-0 start this lacrosse season, despite having a young team and only three returning seniors and a freshman goalie.

The Jags defeated cross-town rivals Clarksburg 15-9 on Wednesday night in a game that was the first test for this young team. With both teams unbeaten early in the 2016 season, Clarksburg came to Germantown with wins over Northwood and Paint Branch, while Northwest had beaten Kennedy and Rockville.

In the early going on Wednesday both teams played a very even game, allowing short runs of goals by each team, but each time one team would seem to pull away the other would reel off a quick flurry of goals to keep the score close.

With the score 4-4 with 6:09 left in the first half, Northwest seniors would take over. Jags attacker Kelly Miller started by scoring to make it 5-4 Jags, which began the run which would put Northwest up for good. Miller led all scorers with five goals in the contest. Miller would net another goal one minute later to make the score 6-4. Northwest senior attack Katie Palmiere would put another goal in the net with 2:32 remaining in the half. Palmiere would finish the game with three goals, on four shots. She would also be credited with one assist. Just thirty seconds later another senior, midfielder Madeline Gerardi slashed through Clarksburg defenders and sliced a shot into the goal to extend the lead to 8-4 going into halftime.

After the break, Clarksburg came out and scored three quick goals to cut the Northwest lead to just one goal. Coyote’s junior Maddie August scored two quick goals; she would finish the game with four goals, on five shots.

With 19:17 left to play in the game, and the score 8-7, Northwest freshman Haley Slingluff mitigated some of the damage and began to correct the course for Northwest scoring one of her two goals in the game. Northwest would score again to lead 10-7. Clarksburg senior Lola Collins would cut the lead back to 10-8, after her second goal of the game with 15:08 remaining.

Northwest’s Brooke Mandel would start a four-goal run by the Jags at the 14:35 mark that would end with her third goal of the game with 7:19 left to play. Mandel’s goal would bookend two more Jag goals, including Kelly Miller’s third of the game to put Northwest on top 14-8. Each team would score once more for a final score of 15-9 Jags.

Clarksburg, now 2-1 for the season, will travel to play 0-2 Seneca Valley on Friday night. The Lady Jags are also on the road at 1-1 Quince Orchard, who are coming off of a 14-4 victory over Seneca Valley on Tuesday.
