UPDATE: Head-On Collision Closes Ridge Road for Hours

A head-on collision between a tractor-trailer truck and two pickup trucks badly injured one driver and snarled traffic in Damascus on Maryland Route 27 for hours on Monday afternoon.

   The incident happened on Ridge Road between Gue Road and Woodfield Road at about 1:41 pm on March 21. According to MCPD, the preliminary investigation has revealed that a 1994 GMC Sonoma was traveling northbound on Ridge Road when for reasons still under investigation, the Sonoma crossed the center line and collided with a 2015 Ford F-450 which was travelling southbound on Ridge Road. The Sonoma was then struck by a 2015 tractor trailer that was travelling northbound on Ridge Road.

   According to MCFRS, the driver of the white Sonoma pickup had to be extricated from the vehicle. He was taken by medivac helicopter to a trauma center with life-threating injuries. The Maryland State Police helicopter was able to land in the parking lot of the Redeemer Lutheran Church at Ridge Road and Woodfield Road, where the victim was airlifted to a trauma center. The driver of the F-450 was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured, according to police.

   The road remained closed for a few hours are Hazardous Materials Units worked to clean up a large diesel fuel spill on Ridge Road at the site of the collision.

    Police confirmed that the MCPD Collision Reconstruction Unit was on scene and investigating the cause of the accident. No charges have been filed against any drivers as of yet. As of 4:45 pm Ridge Road remained closed in both directions between Gue Road and Woodfield Road in Damascus.
