Downed Power Line Sparks Clopper Road Brush Fire

March 8, 2016

Montgomery County Fire Rescue Service units were called to the wooded in Gunners Branch Park along Clopper Road between Cinnamon Drive and Allspice Drive in Germantown for a brush fire on Tuesday afternoon.

The fire sparked after a power line snapped and ignited the dried grass shortly before 12:30 pm. Fire units responded to the area with brush trucks to fight the fire which had burned roughly three-acres of woodland before firefighters could extinguish the fire.

Firefighters doused the area with water and raked the burned areas in an effort to locate any hot spots or smoldering embers.

As a result of the fire and snapped wire, power and traffic lights were out for a few hours. As of 1:50 pm Pepco’s Outage Map reported about 65 customers were still without power in the area of Cinnamon Drive and Clopper Road. Pepco was on the scene evaluating.

Traffic on Clopper Road was reduced to one lane for about 90 minutes as MCFRS worked to extinguish the fire.
