Clarksburg’s Playoff Double-Header Ends Coyotes’ Basketball Dreams
After an inspiring run to the finals of 4A West playoffs, the Clarksburg boys and girls teams season ended Saturday as both teams were unable to get past Whitman and make it to the Maryland State semi-finals. Both teams played a playoff double-bill at Montgomery Blair High School on March 5.
The boys gave Whitman all they could handle taking the 17-9 Vikings into overtime, but coming up just one heartbreaking point short 62-61.
Whitman jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, thanks in part to nine points, including two three-pointers from senior Shaq Diboti-Lobe, but the Coyotes were able to battle back to trail by just four 17-13, thanks to two three-balls from junior Ian Krishnan and one from fellow junior Michael Winterburn.
The teams would maintain that spread by the end of the third with each team scoring 12 in the second quarter.
After the half, the Coyotes came out and stepped up their defense and held the Vikings to just eight points in the third, while going on a 16 to 8 run, thanks in large part to two more long-range jumpers from the behind the three-point arc from Krishnan. He would finish with five three-balls and 17 points in the game. The Coyotes would take the lead, 36-35 for the first time with four minutes left in the third.
The Coyotes would hold the lead for much of the fourth quarter, until 55 seconds remaining when Whitman’s Dihoti-Lobe would sink two free throws to give the Vikings the lead 55-53. W
