Roberto Clemente MS Celebrates Black History with “Live Your Dream” Showcase

February 26, 2016

Roberto Clemente Middle School students, parents and community members braved the stormy weather and gathered at the theater at Seneca Valley High School on Thursday to celebrate community and Black History Month with a showcase of talent and inspiration.

The middle school’s African-American Parent Association sponsored the event which featured students recreating famous oratory, performances by RCMS student Matthew Owusu and recording artist BriaMarie, as well as talks from motivational speaker Eldonie Mason and author and keynote speaker MCPS principal Dr. Joey Jones.

The theme for the event, “Live Your Dream” was conveyed through speakers and performances, and through the presence of represented black-owned businesses, including PurchaseBlack.com, MiMi, and Ujamaa Box, who are working to make their dreams real and living them.

The evening was hosted by Connie Monte of the Roberto Clemente counseling department and was kicked off by passionate recreations of famous historical speeches from Fredrick Douglas, Angelina Grimke, and Abraham Lincoln. Roberto Clemente eighth graders Nam Lam, Sydney Hartman, and Jhanvee Petel embodied the passion and oratorical fire of the historical figures as they historical words filled the theater.

The evening also included a vocal performance from RCMS students Giselle Badoo and Anna Moitoza, who sang the “Black National Anthem.”

It was recording artist and singer BriaMarie who got the theater rocking with a performance of her anti-bullying anthem “#L2LU (Learn to Love You).” BriaMaria’s music has been featured on MTV and VH1.
