Police Standoff Ends Peacefully

A barricade situation in Germantown has ended peacefully with the distraught man surrendering to police after a two-hour standoff.

Montgomery County Police were called to a residence in the 20800 block of Shakespeare Drive in Germantown at about 7:30 pm on Sunday, February 21 after it was reported that man was threatening harm to himself and others.

The MCPD Emergency Response Team responded to the scene and found a 39-year-old male had become upset after a domestic argument and made threats. All residents of the home were able to escape without harm.

Shakespeare Drive was closed to traffic from Frederick Road as police attempted to communicate with the man. Emergency Response Team members could be heard communicating with the man, over loudspeakers asking him to come out and talk. At one point police were heard to say, “Put the gun down and talk to us. We don’t want to see any guns. We need to speak to you without the gun.”

Police said the man surrendered peacefully at 9:28 pm. Montgomery County Police spokesman Capt. Paul Starks said that the man was taken into custody and would be evaluated and that investigators would determine if the man would face any charges as a result of this incident. No injuries were reported.
