Icy Conditions Close MCPS, Delay MoCo & Federal Office Openings
Monday’s snow has turned to ice, but has not turned to rain as soon as many had hoped. The National Weather Service has issued and extended the Winter Storm Warning for the Germantown and Montgomery County areas until 10:00 am on this morning, Tuesday, Feb. 16 and is calling for up to one-quarter of an inch of ice from freezing rain.
As a result, MCPS has closed school for Tuesday, Feb. 16. due to emergency weather conditions. All school-sponsored and community-use activities in school buildings are canceled. MCPS administrative offices will open three hours late. Day care programs in school buildings may open after 11:30 am.
Montgomery County Government will operate on a delayed schedule. County offices will open at 11:00 am, with liberal leave for non-essential County employees. All essential County employees are expected to report to work as scheduled. Non-essential employees may use unscheduled annual leave, paid time off, leave without pay or compensatory time without prior supervisory approval. Employees who choose not to report for work must notify their supervisors.
Montgomery College will open at 12:00 pm noon today, February 16 due to inclement weather.
Federal agencies in the Washington, DC area are open under three hours delayed arrival and employees have the option for unscheduled leave or unscheduled telework. Employees should plan to arrive for work no more than three hours later than they would be expected to arrive.
The National Weather Service said that temperatures remain in the mid- to upper-20s and will be rising to the lower 30s by sometime Tuesday morning. Precipitation will change to rain around mid-morning but will linger in the sheltered valleys.
