BOE to Name New MCPS Superintendent Tonight

February 4, 2016

UPDATE: The Washington Post is reporting that Jack Smith, currently interim Maryland State Superintendent of Schools will be named new MCPS Superintendent tonight.

The Montgomery County Board of Education will appoint a new superintendent of Montgomery County Public Schools at a special meeting to be held tonight, Thursday, Feb. 4 at 6:30 pm at the Caver Educational Center in Rockville.

Last evening the Board sent out a release stating that it would take action on the conditional appointment of the superintendent. The appointment—effective July 1, 2016, through June 30, 2020—will be contingent upon final written approval of the State Superintendent of Schools as required by state law.

The Board has been working in partnership with the search firm of Hazard, Young, Attea, and Associates.  “The Board is committed to hiring the best person to lead our school system in the 21st century. The search will be guided by the tenets of the school district’s strategic planning framework and desired characteristics gathered in the spring of this year from input by stakeholders in Montgomery County,” the Board said in a press release about the status of the superintendent search in October.

The search, which began shortly after it was announced that former Superintendent of Schools Joshua Starr would not be returning after his contract expired. Starr left the post one year ago in February of 2015. Later that month, Larry Bowers was appointed to serve as interim superintendent from February 16, 2015, until June 30, while the Board conducted a search for a new superintendent of schools.

In June, Bowers was again appointed Interim Superintendent after it was made public that the Board’s “preferred candidate” for the superintendent’s post at the time, Andrew Houlihan, had withdrawn his name from consideration for the job leaving the Board unable to find a superintendent before Bowers was to retire on July 1.

Tonight’s meeting will begin at 6:30 pm and will be held in the Board Meeting Room of the Carver Educational Services Center, 850 Hungerford Drive in Rockville.
