Eagles Soar Over Falcons
Seneca Valley extended their winning streak to five-in-a-row with a 48-30 road victory over the Poolesville Falcons in a rare Thursday night game. The game had been moved up due to Blizzard of ’16.
After going down 4-2 early, the Screaming Eagles went on a nine-point run to jump out to an 11-4 lead on Poolesville thanks in part to junior Brandon Simpson’s eight first quarter points. Seneca would lead 13-8 at the end of the first. Simpson would finish with 12 points to lead all scorers.
The Falcons would come back in the second quarter hitting a few quick shots to narrow the lead, but they could never quick overtake the Eagles. Pooleville’s Stephan Lang and Jake Drissel would combine for nine points in the second quarter to cut the lead to 21-18 at halftime.
After the break, the Falcons would get as close as one point, with the score 20-21 with 6:48 remaining in the third quarter. However, the Seneca defense which had given up a combined 63 points in its previous two games began to take control and allowed Poolesville to score just four points in the third quarter and eight points in the fourth quarter. Holding Poolesville, which had been average 51 points per game to just 30 points. The Falcons were led by Jake Drissel, who had eight points, and Stephen Lang who finished with six points.
Seneca was led by Brandon Simpson, who had 12 points, and eight rebounds, as well as three blocks. Seniors Terry Millburne and Quentin Twyman added nine and eight points respectively. In all, it was a balanced team attack, as eleven of 12 Seneca players made it to scorer’s sheet.
Seneca is now 9-3 for the season and 4-0 in the division. The Eagles will put their five-game winning streak on the line at home Tuesday night (provided the snow is cleaned up) against a red hot 11-2 Quince Orchard team that lost a close game to Clarksburg last night, on a last second three-point buzzer beater. Poolesville falls to 4-6-1.
