Clarksburg Basketball Begins Season with Two Wins

Clarksburg has begun the 2015-2016 season on a great note with two wins. Last week, the Coyotes dispatched their Frederick County neighbors Urbana 58-56 in their home opener and travelled to Wootton to defeat the Wootton Patriots 58-49 on Friday night.

The Coyotes jumped out to an early lead thanks to senior Andrew Kostecka’s eight-first quarter points which allowed Clarksburg to take a 16-10 lead at the end of the first period. Kostecka, who will play his college ball at Loyola-Maryland next year, finished the game with 24 points to lead all scorers.

Wootton entered the game with a record of 1-1 after defeating Northwest in the season opener and falling to Kennedy, with the loss to Clarksburg they are now 2-1.

The Patriots, who were led by freshman Kevin Aylssi Etoh with 18 points, including two 3-pointers, and junior Will Quam who pitched in 12 points, six from the field.

But Clarksburg’s Kostecka was just too much for the Patriots. Kostecka dropped shots from behind the three-point arc and was eight-for-12 from the foul line on his way to 24 points. He got help from Micheal Winterburn who added nine points—including two three-balls, and Stephen Armstrong and Stephan Hamilton, who finished with seven points apiece.

The Coyotes will host 1-2 Richard Montgomery at 7:15 pm on Monday night. The Rockets are coming off their first win of the season, a 43-40 victory over Blair last Friday. The Patriots fall to 1-2 and will host 1-1 Poolesville Monday night.
