After two seasons as a .500 team, the Clarksburg High School boys basketball team, which has posted a 12-12 record for the past two years, has hopes returning to the regional finals as they did in 2013-2014.
“Our goal is to play to our capabilities and get back to the Regional final,” said Head Coach George Kissal. “This time we hope to get over that hurdle. I am not sure that it motivates us, or severs more as a lesson. We have learned how fleeting success is and that we need to approach everyday with our goal in mind.”
While it might seem a tall order for team that has lost eight players from last year’s team to graduation, the Coyotes are returning one of the most dynamic players in county in guard Andrew Kostecka. The Loyola University commit is returning for his senior season. The 6-foot-4 guard, is averaging 11.9 points per game, while also pulling down 5.4 rebounds and averaging 2.0 assists per contest in three seasons with the Coyotes.
With Kostecka, Dallas Marshall, and Ian Krishnan, the two other returning senior starters, Kissal feels that Clarksburg may have a better shot at getting back to the regional finals than last year’s team. “I expect our three returning senior starters to step in and fill the leadership role,” said Kissal. “We do return our leading scorer and three of our four leading scorers from last year, so a ton of experience returns.”
Kissal believes that experience and his players ability to do the right thing and make plays anywhere on the court. “This year’s team is much more versatile,” said Kissal, “most guys on the floor can fill multiple roles. Last year had many more specialists.”
He said the core three returning three starters will be supplemented by two players who are moving up from last year’s JV team. He is hoping that junior guard Ryan Costin and sophomore forward Stephen Armstrong will be able to step in an help this team prepare for a deep run in the post season.
The Coyotes will begin their season at home tonight with a game against Frederick County neighbor Urbana at 7:15 pm at Clarksburg High School.
