Kauffman to Seek Third Term on Board of Ed

At-Large representative to the Montgomery County Board of Education, Philip Kauffman has announced his candidacy to run for the re-election to the post he has held since 2008.

Kauffman announced his candidacy through a press release yesterday. A 28-year resident of Montgomery County, Kauffman was first elected to the Board in 2008 and re-elected in 2012. Montgomery County BOE members are elected to four-year terms. His current term will expire in 2016.

As one of the two At-Large members of the Board of Education he would have to be elected by — and represent — the whole of Montgomery County. He will face primary election in April and the general election in November 2016. The other At-Large member of the Board is Jill Ortman-Fouse, who was elected to that post in 2014.

The primary election is schedule for Tuesday, April 26, 2016 and the General Election is slated for Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2016.

Citing the need to provide a more strategic focus on the budget, address MCPS’s enrollment and facility challenges, close achievement gaps, reduce unnecessary testing, and provide more career opportunities, the Olney resident announced his candidacy.

“As an incumbent board member and former PTA leader, I have developed extensive knowledge of our complex system, as well as relationships with many of our county and state officials”, Kauffman said. “This background will be of critical importance as we face our budget challenges. Our student enrollment continues to skyrocket and we need to find the resources, working with our state and local officials, to provide seats for those children. We must carefully consider how best to equitably allocate limited resources to meet the needs of our diverse student community. It will take intelligent leadership to navigate through tough budget times to keep all our schools among the best despite these constraints.”

According to the press release, the campaign will highlight Kauffman’s local and statewide leadership experience. As a member of the Montgomery County Board of Education, he served as president in 2014 and vice president in 2013. He is currently the Chair of the Board’s Policy Management Committee and he previously was Chair of its Fiscal Management Committee.

In 2015, Kauffman was appointed to serve as an MCPS representative on the statewide Evidence Based Panels which are reviewing formulas which will determine future state funding allocations to local school systems. At the state level, in 2014, Phil was elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the Maryland Association of Boards of Education. He has been appointed to Chair the MABE By-Laws Committee and has served on the MABE AD Hoc Committees
