County Council Elects New Officers

At a regular monthly meeting, the Montgomery County Council has elected a new council president and vice president for the 2016 year.

At the meeting held Tuesday, Dec. 1, the County Council unanimously selected long-time Council Member Nancy Floreen as the new president of the Montgomery County Council. The Council also selected Roger Berliner as the new vice president. Both will serve one-year terms as Council Officers.

Floreen replaces outgoing Council President George Leventhal, whose term ended on Nov. 30. She served as vice president under Leventhal last year. Traditionally, the Council elects the current vice president as the next Council President.

Floreen is currently an At-Large member of the Council and has been a member of the County Council since 2002, and has already served as Council President in 2010. Floreen, 63, of Garrett Park, chaired the Council’s Transportation, Infrastructure, Energy and Environment Committee until 2010 when she became Chair of the Planning, Housing and Economic Development Committee.

In nominating Floreen for the Council President’s position, Craig Rice (District 2- Germantown) said Floreen has, “a history of shepherding this Council through the some tough master plans, including the Great Seneca Science Corridor and the White Flint Master Plan, and we will have master plans ahead of us. We certainly look to you to give us that guidance again.”

Previously, she served as mayor of Garrett Park and the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, as well as, the County Planning Board.

Roger Berliner, a North Potomac resident, is the County Council representative from District 1 which represents the Western part of Montgomery County from the DC line to the Frederick County border, including Darnestown and Poolesville. He served as Council President in 2011.

In addition to his council roles, Berliner currently serves as a Council representative to the Pedestrian, Bicycle, Traffic Safety Advisory Board, and previously served as the Council’s representative to the County’s Sustainability Working Group, the Green Economic Task Force, and the Transit Task Force.
