Germantown Ranks in Bottom Third of List of Best Small Cities

Germantown has ranked pretty low WalletHub’s ranking of Best and Worst Small Cities in America. Germantown ranked in the bottom third of 1268 cities, coming in at 817.

In the ranking, Germantown scored 42.37, with an Affordability rank of 773, and Economic Health Rank of 222, an education & Health Rank of 440, and Quality of Life Rank way down near the bottom at 1254.

In comparison, Germantown’s neighboring Montgomery County towns Rockville ranked 23rd (The highest Maryland ranking town), Bethesda ranked 128, Gaithersburg ranked 305, Potomac ranked 400, Olney ranked 464, and North Bethesda ranked 487.

Montgomery County towns ranking below Germantown’s 817, are Silver Spring coming in at 823, and Montgomery Village at 1021.

To find the best small cities in America, WalletHub’s analysts compared 1,268 cities across four key dimensions: 1) Affordability, 2) Economic Health, 3) Education & Health and 4) Quality of Life. For the sample, WalletHub chose cities with a population size between 25,000 and 100,000 residents.

Living in a small city might bring “shorter business hours, a heavier reliance on cars, and fewer dating opportunities.” WalletHub’s analysts compared 1,268 small cities in the U.S. to find the ones where residents don’t have to give up much. The data set includes a total of 22 metrics, ranging from housing costs to school-system quality to the number of restaurants per capita. WalletHub describes small cities as the perfect fit if you leave a small town behind but don’t want the big city life.
